Researchers find psilocybin in the animal kingdom for the first time.
New study announces that psilocybin has been found in certain species of cicada that are parasitized by Massospora fungus. The fungus infects the cicadas as they emerge from the ground and create spore “plugs” at the lower third of the insects after eating away the body. Under the influence, the cicadas become hyperactive and hypersexual, flying around and spreading the spores on the ground and other cicadas. This is the first time psilocybin has been found in the animal kingdom.
