Good Friday Experiment Begins

The Good Friday Experiment finds that psilocybin can catalyze spiritual experiences in religious people.

April 1962

Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert start the Good Friday Experiment. Twenty divinity students at Boston University are given psilocybin to evaluate whether it can catalyze religious/spiritual experiences. Compared to the control group, 80% of the participants in the psilocybin group reported profound religious experiences.

The results of this study were the topic of Walter Pahnke’s Harvard PhD thesis.
