Chemist Alexander Shulgin and his wife Ann published “PiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story” in 1991. PiHKAL is short for “Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved.” The first part of the book is a fictionalized autobiography of the couple. The second part includes detailed information on 179 psychoactive compounds (most of which Dr. Shulgin discovered) including instructions on their synthesis, dosages, and bioassays. PiHKAL would be followed 6 years later by the publication of TiHKAL: The Continuation.
