The First Bicycle Day

Albert Hofmann self-tests LSD and rides his bicycle home, describing the trip as a "horror show."

April 19, 1943

The previous day, Hofmann had accidentally ingested some of the LSD he synthesized. He described the experience in his book LSD: My Problem Child as “an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors.” He wanted to make sure it was the LSD that was responsible, so he dosed himself with 0.25 mg the next day, and had a very different experience.
